The orientation leader position is open to all current Hampshire College students. In order to be an orientation leader you must be an active student during the semester immediately following orientation. There are approximately sixty-four orientation leader positions available, with returning orientation leaders receiving priority in the hiring process.

Orientation leaders are responsible for welcoming groups of approximately fifteen new and/or transfer students to the College and providing them with a small group experience that helps them acclimate to and prepare for life at Hampshire. Orientation leaders work in pairs as they lead their groups in activities over the course of six days. Orientation is comprised of two components: College-sponsored events and small group activities. Leaders are responsible for planning and implementing their small group activities in advance of the orientation program. All leaders will complete four full days of training, spread out over the spring and late summer. Orientation leaders will be asked to return to campus earlier than other students, so that they can complete their training.

In addition to training, orientation leaders will be expected to work throughout the full four days of the orientation program, with specific hours determined by the program director. Leaders will spend their days working with their small groups, leading them both in activities and discussions, as well as bringing them to various events across campus. Leaders will be expected to participate in many of the events that their groups attend, even if they are not leading those particular events; however, they will have their evenings free.

Successful orientation leader candidates will exhibit many, if not all, of the following qualities:

  • commitment
  • follow-through
  • reliability
  • accountability
  • compassion and understanding
  • enthusiasm
  • knowledge of Hampshire College
  • ability to lead
  • flexibility
  • communication skills
  • commitment to being inclusive
  • responsibility
  • respect
  • positive attitude
  • problem-solving skills

Orientation leaders report to the director of new student programs. Leaders will receive a stipend of approximately $60 upon completion of May training, and a stipend of approximately $390 upon their successful completion of the orientation program.* Three meals a day are also offered during the seven days of the orientation training and program in the late summer.

Orientation leaders must be 18 years of age by the position start date, Sunday, August 27. The academic and disciplinary standing of all applicants will be reviewed and considered as a part of the hiring process.

Please note: Applicants may apply for both orientation positions if they desire (orientation leader, orientation coordinator). If you apply for both, you will only be offered the coordinator or leader position, not both.

*Stipend amounts are based on the number of hours worked at a pay rate of $11/hour. Specific hours will be determined by the program director.
